Station Attendants

Salary: $25.89 to $29.99 an hour

Location: Vancouver, Winnipeg, Kingston and Ottawa

Who Should Apply: VIA Rail is looking to hire Station Attendants to work at train stations in cities across Canada.

Station Attendants create and modify bookings, check tickets, announce and provide updates on train arrivals, departures or delays, assist passengers, ensure station cleanliness, and handle luggage and packages.

To get hired, you need to have a high school diploma, a valid driver's license, at least one year of customer service experience and the ability to communicate with a smile in English and French.

Also, the ability to handle weights up to 50 pounds — which is the equivalent of a large suitcase — is required.

If you get hired for this job, you'll have to be available to work a variable schedule that includes weekends and holidays.

Shifts vary between four, eight and 10 hours a day and can start as early as 4:30 a.m. or 7 a.m. and end as late as 11:30 p.m. or 1 a.m.

On Train Service Attendants — Food

Salary: $27.45 an hour

Location: Vancouver and Winnipeg

Who Should Apply: You need to have a high school diploma, at least one year of experience in customer service, the ability to speak English and French, and the ability to handle weights up to 50 pounds.

Also, the job required availability to work variable schedules and travel on each trip for five to six days.

Service Attendants — Food not only assist with luggage and ensure the safety of passengers on board but also sell and serve meals, including food and alcohol.

Jobs are available on the Winnipeg-Toronto, Winnipeg-Vancouver or Winnipeg-Churchill and Vancouver-Winnipeg routes.

Chefs

Salary: $30.33 to $35.57 an hour

Location: Vancouver and Winnipeg

Who Should Apply: You need to have a high school diploma, a current sanitation or food safe certificate, a Red Seal Certification and three years of experience in line cooking.

If you get hired, you'll work on board trains — on Winnipeg-Toronto, Winnipeg-Vancouver or Vancouver-Winnipeg routes — as a chef.

Duties include planning and directing food prep and cooking, preparing and cooking meals, adapting dishes for customers with food allergies or intolerances, ensuring the quality of food, and managing the requisition of food, kitchen supplies and equipment.

This job is available from March to October with the possibility of being called back for next year.

On Train Service Attendants

Salary: $27.45 an hour

Location: Montreal

Who Should Apply: VIA Rail is looking to hire people to work as Service Attendants and provide customer service on trains.

You will accompany passengers throughout their trip and help them with luggage, serve food, ensure their safety, and provide assistance as needed.

Since this job involves travel, you must be available to work variable schedules (including weekends and holidays) and able to be away from home on each trip for one to three days.

You also need a high school diploma, at least one year of customer service experience and the ability to speak English and French.

The ability to handle weights up to 50 pounds — which is the equivalent of a large suitcase — is required as well.
