Your new office? Right: A career with VIA Rail could be just around the corner!

If you're looking for a high-paying job opportunity that doesn't require you to have decades of experience or specific degree-level qualifications, you're in luck! VIA Rail is hiring locomotive engineer apprentices in Montreal right now, and you can earn six figures within two years. Even better, you don't need transit or engineering experience as all of the training is provided.

The VIA Rail Locomotive Engineer Apprenticeship Program is currently open for Montreal candidates, with the apprenticeship set to begin in January 2025. If hired, you'll undergo two years of "rigorous" training, qualifying you to operate passenger trains to destinations like London, Windsor, Sarnia, Ottawa, and Montreal.

During the training, you'll be paid from day one. The salary starts at $77,000 in the first year and jumps to $115,000 in the second year. Once you've completed the apprenticeship, the salary climbs even higher, reaching "over" $150,000. Along with the financial perks, you'll receive comprehensive benefits, a defined pension plan, and all the gear you need, including a company-provided iPad to keep you updated on the job.

Unsurprisingly, for that salary, this isn't your average nine-to-five. To take on this role, you must be prepared to handle varying work schedules and travel away from home. VIA Rail notes that many of your assignments will involve a one-night layover in a different city.

What's more, you'll dive into a world where safety, speed, and precision are everything. For two years, you'll be immersed in hands-on training that involves job shadowing experienced engineers, engaging in simulations, and undergoing continuous testing and evaluations. The training is designed to ensure you're fully prepared for the challenges of operating a train, which—by the sounds of it —is no small feat.

You'll also multitask in a fast-paced environment, making quick decisions while constantly communicating with your crew and rail traffic controllers.

After completing the apprenticeship, your role as a locomotive engineer will involve ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of VIA Rail passengers and crew (no pressure!). You'll need to master safety rules, stay on top of ever-changing procedures, and work closely with other crew members. Every trip will require sharp focus, quick decision-making, and a customer-centric attitude, as it'll be on you to make sure everything runs smoothly.

As for qualifications, VIA Rail isn't asking for a long list of degrees or years of experience. In fact, all you need is a high school diploma or an equivalent and at least three years of work experience. Any type of work experience is considered relevant, even if it's not related to engineering or transit in the slightest. However, the application notes that having experience in a role that required vigilance will put you in an even better position.

Strong communication skills in English are essential to apply. You'll also need a clean driver's license and the ability to meet all required medical and safety standards.

If this sounds like your kind of challenge, don't wait—the application deadline is August 28, 2024. With seven places available on the apprenticeship, a six-figure salary and a unique new role could be just down the tracks!
